As you may already know, KGM is the new name for SsangYong. The Korean car maker has a history of building tough, go-anywhere tow cars such as the Korando and the Rexton. While sometimes a little rough around the edges, SsangYongs have usually cost far less than the competition.
Under the new owners, KGM is still focusing on value for money, but through superb standard equipment and keen, rather than bargain-basement, pricing.
For caravanners, it’s a shame there’s no diesel or 4×4 for towing. However, the petrol Actyon is approved to pull up to 1500kg. Tow no more than 85% of the kerbweight for the sake of stability, and tourers weighing up to 1343kg make sensible matches.
KGM provided a farm trailer for my test drive of the KGM Actyon K50, although it was far lighter than a caravan. The Actyon pulled this modest weight well, although the front tyres struggled for grip in damp weather, highlighting the absence of four-wheel drive.
The cabin is spacious and a big improvement in KGM’s standard of finish. The car uses the same petrol engine as the KGM Torres I tested recently, with adequate towing performance but disappointing thirst – just 33.1mpg on the combined cycle.
