KGM has updated its Actyon and Torres SUVs with new hybrid versions. We’ve been driving the Actyon. KGM was formerly known as SsangYong.

Power comes from a 150hp 1.5-litre turbocharged engine and a 177hp electric motor. The combination makes for a definite step-up in performance for the hybrid tow cars compared with the petrol-only Actyon.

We were grateful for the opportunity to tow with the car, albeit with an empty farm trailer. Performance was brisk and stability very good, although a caravan weighing closer to the car’s 1300kg towing capacity would make a much tougher test.

We saw 24mpg while towing, which isn’t very impressive when other hybrids of this size have achieved closer to 30mpg. Power goes to the front wheels. It’s a shame there’s no 4×4 which would improve the Actyon’s towing credentials for those who like caravanning in winter.

Inside, the Actyon is roomy and solidly put together. We found the driving position comfortable and those in the back have lots of room. With just one specification and a high level of standard kit, the Actyon is keenly priced and comes with a five-year/100,000-mile warranty.

Take a look at our review of the KGM Torres K40 AWD, a spacious and practical tow car, but one which has an off-putting thirst. For those who want to buy a pre-owned version as well, see what we make of buying a used SsangYong Rexton, a spacious SUV with plenty of kit.

  • Kerbweight: 1725kg
