Verdict
This caravan is perfect for couples who like their tourer to offer great space for socialising and who don’t demand a fixed bed – plus it has a good sized washroom. Light sleepers will be grateful for the silent running night setting on the mains Ultraheat system.
Pros
Coat and towel hooks are very welcome
It feels roomy inside
The washroom is well proportioned
Cons
Bed slats may fall off runners
The washroom window should be frosted
One of the wardrobes is quite narrow
For couples who prefer extra living space to a fixed bed, this is a fantastic layout. Kit levels are good, storage capabilities are excellent and the 460-2’s relatively low weight will suit a wide range of medium-sized tow cars.
It feels spacious and the wrap-around sofa’s ample length gives plenty of room to stretch out – five can sit comfortably
Pitching & Setting-up
The van was easily manoeuvred. Some strength is required, though, to open the compact, collapsible winder to lower the steadies. Those at the back are awkward to access, because the Bailey’s rear skirt is tight to the steady bolts. The front locker is just big enough for two gas bottles and the steady winder.
The mains controls are just inside the entrance door and are of the rocker variety. Room temperature controls for the Truma system are just above the dresser, while water heater controls are near the sink. It’s all very simple to use. The fridge’s controls took a glance at the manual to get the hang of.
Living
The caravan feels spacious, despite the narrow body. The wrap-around sofa’s ample length gives plenty of room to stretch out and have all your paraphernalia spread about you. Or you can invite your friends – there’s easily space for five to sit.
The neutral-tone upholstery is firm but comfortable. The beige drop-in carpets and walnut-finish cabinets give the whole area a calming, peaceful ambience. The area is lit by night with two corner lights and four spotlights, and by day by a large rooflight. Space is tighter with the table up, but there’s room to push it to one side or the other so diners can excuse themselves. The table seemed small, but at a pinch it will accommodate four for dining.
A wide shelf beneath the front windows compensates for the lack of a centre chest, but be mindful of the deep roof lockers to avoid banging your head when accessing it.
Kitchen
The oblong sink’s detachable drainer and chopping board mean there is enough work space for a kettle and for prepping food. The four-burner gas hob and separate oven and grill should satisfy most cooks. The microwave is set at a sensible height on the opposite wall above an ample work surface; it’s here that you would stand a TV. Between the heater and the worktop sits a handy, deep shelf.
Above and alongside the microwave are lockers, and at floor level is a corner cupboard. Above the sink are cupboards with two lots of LED lights and below it is a large cupboard with slide-out cutlery drawer and wire basket, and dedicated table storage.
Washroom
The large rear washroom houses two wardrobes, one a lot narrower than the other – both would take dresses and coats and both have shelves. There’s a towel ring on the door and three hooks above and adjacent to the electric-flush toilet. Towel hooks are a small point but when they are not there, you really notice it, and I like the separate light over the toilet.
Also above the toilet on the sidewall is a long mirror, and above the basin on the rear wall is a non-frosted window. If the window was frosted, it would have made more sense to have the mirror behind the basin.
The fully lined shower unit has a chrome-plated showerhead and a shell-shaped soap dish, but you’ll still have to reach to the floor for shampoo bottles.
The washroom area is ample for getting changed. It’s a good space.
Beds
There are several design solutions to the problem of slats falling off runners when the double bed in the lounge is made up, but Bailey has not employed them here, so the slats and seat base will fall off if you are not careful.
However, with the cushions rearranged, the U-shaped sofa turns into a very wide bed, which is comfortable and firm. Its parallel seats are also long enough to be used as single beds.
Storage
A couple’s belongings would easily disappear into the 460-2’s ample storage spaces. Seat boxes deal with bedding, folding chairs and awnings, and there is exterior access to the offside one. Two wardrobes swallow clothing, while the eight lockers in the lounge can handle any overspill.
There is enough space in the kitchen cupboards to take crockery and groceries, including tall cereal boxes. On this occasion we didn’t travel light yet only filled half the available space. Our one quibble is there are no drawers, and these are useful for keeping small items safe.
