Mazda has launched a new CX-5 family SUV. The new car promises more space and lower emissions than its predecessor.
From launch, every CX-5 is a mild-hybrid petrol with a 141hp petrol engine. Buyers have the choice of front- and four-wheel-drive versions when they’re choosing the best caravan tow car for their needs.
Despite the modest power output, the CX-5 is approved to tow up to 2000kg. For the sake of stability, we’d recommend following the 85% matching guideline for your car/caravan match, which gives weights from 1385-1454kg, depending on the car’s specification.
Additional engine options are on the way, including a full hybrid which should offer stronger performance as well as better economy.
The new CX-5 has a longer wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear axles) than the old car, which promises more space inside. However, Mazda has done away with the rotary controller which made it easier to use the infotainment system without distraction. All the controls are now on-screen, including those for the heating and ventilation.
Boot space has been increased to 583 litres, which makes the CX-5 competitive on luggage room with its most practical rivals.
Prices start from £31,550 for the entry-level front-wheel-drive car, rising to £40,950 for the top-spec 4×4 model.
We hope to put the new CX-5 through a full towing test soon.
