Volkswagen has launched the second generation of its five-seat SUV, the T-Roc.
Sitting between the diminutive T-Cross and the larger Tiguan, the new model promises improved infotainment and more space for passengers and luggage, so it could be a contender for those after the best small SUV for towing.
There are two engines available, both 1.5-litre petrols with 116hp or 150hp. These engines have mild hybrid assistance, with full hybrid models to follow. We’ve been driving the more powerful of the two, which looks the better choice for towing duties. It has 184lb ft and comfortably pulls a sensibly matched caravan.
On our brief towing journey, we found stability to be extremely good for a relatively light car. There was almost no unwanted movement at the motorway speed limit, something which the best small tow cars should always provide. The only obvious downside to the new T-Roc is there’s no all-wheel-drive model.
Inside, the latest T-Roc has a better standard of finish than its predecessor, and the new infotainment system is clear and easy to use. There’s enough space in the back for adults, and the boot capacity of 475 litres is impressive. If you want a small SUV to tow with, the T-Roc deserves a place on your shortlist.
