BMW has updated the iX electric SUV with more power and a larger battery to travel further between charges.
The iX xDrive45 has an official range of 367 miles. We saw closer to 330 miles between charges in solo driving. While towing a twin-axle Swift caravan weighing 1922kg, the car achieved a range of 160 miles. That’s not the kind of distance to change the minds of EV-doubters, but it’s much better than the 100 miles or so we achieved with an earlier iX model in 2022, the BMW iX.
As well as an improved range, the iX xDrive45 also offers better performance. With 408hp and 516 lb ft of torque, there’s more than enough muscle in this electric tow car to cope with a heavy twin-axle caravan. The iX is stable at speed, too, and with four-wheel drive it should shrug off inclement weather.
Inside, the BMW is luxurious and modern, with huge twin screens dominating the dash. The infotainment looks very impressive, although it is complex – using voice instructions to control it helps to reduce distractions on the move.
There’s plenty of space for passengers, whether sat in the front or the back, although the 500-litre luggage capacity is unexceptional for a car of this size.
