Verdict
Sprite manages to combine a roomy interior, low weight, an attractive price and a versatile layout to present a very tempting proposition for families.
Pros
Spacious feel throughout
A high specification level
Plenty of workspace in the kitchen
Well chosen features throughout
Cons
No shelves in the overhead lockers
No power point in the lounge
TV point is well away from the lounge
Fixed-bed layout limits night-time seating options once kids are in bed
How does Sprite’s 2009 six-berth, fixed-bed offering stack up to the needs of a family on holiday? The price and weight look good, but the competition is pretty tough.
At 191cm x 132cm, the fixed bed is a good size, even for six-footers
Pitching & Setting-up
There’s plenty of room for two gas bottles in the front locker, with room to spare for other equipment. Access is easy too, as the door is strut-supported.
Quattro buyers get a wet locker, external access to the storage under the fixed bed, and a two-piece entrance door. There’s no master switch for the internal lights at the entrance, though, but the controls are sited there.
Living
The sunroof isn’t as big as on some vans, but it combines with the large one-piece front window to make the lounge light and airy. No complaints, either, about comfort levels in the lounge, which has an adjustable spotlight in all four corners.
There are a few niggles here though. The central chest has a fold-over, rather than slide-out, design for its extension, and when it is extended it doesn’t fit flush with the freestanding table. What’s more, there’s no power point in the lounge, and those who like to watch TV will find the swinging-arm TV bracket in the fixed-bed area feels a long way away if you’re in the lounge.
The overall finish in the lounge is good, although we were a little concerned by the loose fit of the overhead lockers, and the fact that the blown-air vent points directly out of the entrance door, so the seating area takes a while to heat up.
Kitchen
Siting the sink directly next to the cooker frees up plenty of workspace, and there is heaps of room in the main kitchen cupboard, below. The removeable drainer frees up more work surface, and its high-rim design is very practical.
Every cook appreciates a separate grill and oven, and a large fridge, and the Quattro has both. There’s no microwave, but the three-burner hob should be enough for most.
Unfortunately, there’s only one power point in the kitchen, and that could prove problematic, as there are none in the lounge.
Washroom
Swift has gone for the wetroom approach in the Quattro and, by and large, it works. There’s a domestic-style door to the washroom, and the basin and storage are outside the shower/toilet wetroom.
The swivel toilet helps maximise legroom, but we believe most people prefer a bench model. The light switch is on the rooflight, which might be difficult for young children to reach. Still, there’s a towel rail and soap dish by the basin.
Like the toiletries cupboard under the basin, the wardrobe looks as though it might struggle to accommodate all the necessaries for a family of six. It’s a good depth but it would be better if it were a little wider.
Beds
Setting up the bunk beds is quickly and easily done, although the cushions aren’t a particularly good fit, especially on the lower bunk.
Space allocation here is impressive; headroom down below is ample, and many youngsters will be able to sit up in bed in the upper bunk.
Halogen spotlights provide the lighting and they can get very hot, so children need to be warned.
At 191cm x 132cm, the fixed bed is a good size, even for six-footers. There’s no sunroof above it, but plenty of light comes in through the side window. In the evening, the overhead light and two adjustable spots make the area cosy.
We were pleased to see the large shelf above the window, but were concerned that there are only two lockers above the bed. There’s plenty of room under the bed though.
Storage
It’s not without its flaws when it comes to storage, especially when it comes to the fixed-bed area and the wardrobe, but the Quattro manfully warms to the task of providing adequate storage for an extended family holiday.
There’s good storage provision outside, too, and for keeping wet or dirty items separate from other clothing.
