I have just returned from a long drive down to Plymouth with a colleague, where I was checking the cover of our bumper March issue as it rolled off the presses (look out for it in the shops from February 1st!).

When we got to the printworks, unfortunately there was a bit of a delay due to a problem with our particular press, so rather than hang around a frankly dull industrial estate, we decided to head into town to sample the delights of a rather chilly Plymouth.

It's well worth a visit at any time of the year, due to an abundance of historical and entertaining sights. These range from the landing stage where the pilgrim fathers set off for America on the Mayflower, to the Hoe, where Sir Francis Drake infamously finished his game of bowls despite being told of the imminent arrival of the Spanish Armada. There is even an impressive Aquarium just next to the marina, if the weather takes a turn for the worse.

 

However, the high point for me was a little fish and chip restaurant a stones throw from the Mayflower landing stage, called Platters. Clearly a favourite with the locals, we decided to eat there while we were waiting for the presses to be fixed. Wow! What a great choice. I don't think I have ever had fresher fish and chips. The batter was as light as a feather and the food even came with a very generous serving of home-made tartare sauce (the more the better as far I'm concerned!)

 

On future press trips, I will be secretly hoping for more press troubles in order that I might be able to squeeze in a return trip!
