Adria has long been a popular imported brand – in fact, it was named the best manufacturer: new caravans at the recent Owner Satisfaction Awards 2025.

From its base in Slovenia, the firm produces robust, practical tourers, such as the Adria Adora 623DT Sava and the Adria Alpina Colorado.

Although models such as the Optima proved a favourite with UK caravanners, in 1994 the imports came to a halt. Enter Stuart and Jenny Cook, who proceeded to set up Adria GB, acquire all the parts from the old importer, IMV, and sign a deal enabling them to import the brand into the UK again.

Fast forward and the Cooks eventually handed back to Adria itself, which took over marketing and importing more models. In 2004, Adria brought out the entry-level Altea range, a line-up that UK customers took to very quickly.

Now, some 20 years on, the Altea still offers excellent value. For example, I spotted a 2020 pre-owned Altea 622DK Avon, a single-axle family tourer with fixed bunks. Is this a worth looking at if you’re after the best secondhand caravan? Let’s find out.

Model history

The Altea range had originally used numbers for the model designations, but in a bid to capture buyers’ attention, the company decided to name its models after UK rivers in 2013. Hence names such as the Trent and the Severn appeared.

However, the model number was left on the vans, to help buyers relate to the caravans they had come to know.

The lounge in the Avon
Comfortable lounge seating makes up a double or two singles

The Altea was upgraded over the years, too, and for the 2020 line-up, that meant smart new interiors and a fresh exterior.

The Avon, a full six-berth tourer, was originally equivalent to the Severn, a six-berth with a slightly different floorplan.

For the 2020 season, the Severn was replaced by the Avon, with a revised caravan layout.

2020 lockers
The lockers were redesigned for the 2020 season, to offer good storage for bulky items

The door was moved to the rear, near the triple fixed bunks and side single dinette.

The kitchen was centrally located, opposite the wardrobe and washroom. Anyone looking for the best 6 berth caravan will want to ensure there’s a comfortable living space, and the Avon delivers, coming with a large, comfortable front lounge fitted with superb wrap-around seating.

The stainless steel sink
Stainless-steel sink is a good size, and in this Avon, it was clearly in first-class condition

Among other benefits, the spec provided a microwave, an oven, a three-burner gas hob, Truma blown-air heating and a Dometic fridge.

What to look out for in a 2020 Adria Altea 622DK Avon

If you’re looking at buying a used caravan, there are always numerous checks to carry out. In the case of the Avon, I’d advise looking out for the following:

  • Signs of damp around windows and door
  • Problems with 12V electrics
  • Good condition and support in the lounge seating
  • Squeaky furniture fittings
  • Good condition and support in all fixed-bed mattresses
  • Scuffs, grazing or other damage on wheels and tyres
  • Loose fittings and trim

Price checker

I checked out a few prices for the Avon and found them at £16,995 to £18,495 – so it will pay to shop around.

The side dinette

The model viewed here was the cheapest and was in good condition, although I noticed the upholstery had lost a little support. For the rest of the range, you can expect to pay:

  • 492DT Aire – £16,950-£17,195
  • 612DL Tyne – £17,195-£17,395
  • 622DP Dart – £17,395-£17,895

Technical specification of the 2020 Adria Altea 622DK Avon

  • Price: £16,995
  • Berths: 6
  • MiRO: 1471kg
  • Payload: 149kg
  • MTPLM: 1650kg
  • Internal length: 6.20m
  • Width: 2.31m

Verdict

Adria caravans are known for their robust, no-frills build, but water ingress isn’t unheard of around the windows and door.

Watch for broken interior and exterior trim, too, which can be costly to replace.

The interior revamp in 2020 gave these vans a noticeable lift and if you like a capacious front locker, the Altea scores well.

Add a great layout, with lots of storage, and you can see why the Avon is a good used buy.

Alternative models

If you are looking for a lighter, slightly cheaper six-berth, try a 2015 Elddis Xplore 586, which also has fixed bunks and a good washroom, at prices ranging from £11,995 to £12,495, depending on the condition. Otherwise, there’s the Compass Casita 586 from 2017, which is also based on the Xplore layout, but offers higher spec than the Adria. You should find these at prices from £14,495 to £14,995.
