Adria launched the 623DT Sava, an 8ft-wide twin-axle in its middle Adora range with six berths, for the 2019 season.

Since then, the market for 8ft-wide caravans for the whole family has expanded dramatically, with some that do not go to the extra expense of two axles. So does the Sava still stack up as a family tourer? I headed to Barnsdale Leisure, in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, to find out.

Pitch and set-up

I think the Sava certainly makes a stylish twin-axle caravan, with its silver sides, sleek profile and stylish alloys.

There is external access to a wet locker on the nearside at the front and to the area under the bunk further back. There is also a huge gas locker at the front. Adria, which features in our best caravan manufacturer, leaves its A-frames largely bare, which I thought could potentially be a good place for mounting a bike rack.

Lounge in the Adria Adora 623DT Sava

Step into the Sava with no scatter cushions and plastic wrapping still present, as you could do at a dealer, and it looks a bit stark, mainly because Adria has done away with all door handles in favour of push catches.

The types of caravans that are designed for the whole family will need to feel homely, and that’s something that I felt was achieved here, thanks to the scattering of colourful cushions. The large ones attach magnetically to the backrests, or roll up to function as bolsters.

All this is well lit by daylight flooding in through the openable sun roof, or at night by dimmable ambient light and five spots.

The U-shaped seating means everyone should be able to watch one of the best caravan TVs that you can place on the bracket by the door. There’s a mains socket in the offside corner and the USB ports are under here, too. There’s also a neat Bluetooth media centre below this locker, connected to speakers.

For snacks, a little shelf opens out in the centre of the ‘U’, but the foldaway table is easy to fetch from its storage by the door.

The rear single dinette has a clip-on table and a large window. The spotlights here are more designed for the bunks when they are made up, but I was pleased to see you also get a mains socket and more USB ports.

Kitchen in the Adria Adora 623DT Sava

A good kitchen can be an important requirement when you’re choosing the right caravan. A long three-burner gas hob fits in line with the sink on the large workspace. It’s well lit, and you get a mains sockets at each end of the unit.

Below, there is a separate oven and grill, while a 140-litre slimline fridge is to the side. There is also a microwave in one of the overhead lockers.

Washroom in the Adria Adora 623DT Sava

The nearside shower cubicle in the end washroom is spacious and has a large roof vent and a clothes rail. The mirror behind the rectangular basin is well lit, while by the circular toilet at the offside end, there is a toilet roll holder and a shelf. You also get a towel rail, but I did note there are no hooks.

Sleeping in the Adria Adora 623DT Sava

I found the front double is made up in a slightly unusual way. The backrests are one-piece, so you remove the central cushion, then lay the backrests down with an infill cushion in the middle over slatted platforms that pull out. A slight bite in the nearside base cushion means you can’t turn it over, but the knee roll isn’t as hard as it might look.

It’s the same story with the small dinette: because of another small bite, you have to keep the rear seat cushion face-up when you lower the table to make up the lower bunk. The upper bunk is a development since the Sava was launched. What looks like overhead lockers is actually the upper bunk, which you just roll out onto ledges. It’s much easier than the ‘pull up and over’ method some brands go for here; you do have to roll the slats out, however, and put them in position.

Permanent bunks
All four of the permanent bunks have spotlights and USB ports

The permanent bunks on the nearside are a better bet. They both have their own window, and the lower one can even be raised up at the head for reading.

All four of the bunk beds have their own spotlights, and handily, more USB ports are accessible on both sides.

Storage in the Adria Adora 623DT Sava

Keeping the kitchen all to one side leaves room for a huge double wardrobe opposite, although part of the base is taken up with the Alde heater. There are drawers in here.

Although this is technically in the front half of the van, it’s likely to be used by people in the bunks, because storage at the rear is limited. There is room under the fixed bunks, but you have to lift the slats to reach it.

Both underseat areas at the front are clear, although they do house some wiring. Kitchen storage includes large pull-out baskets, two drawers and a small pan locker, an overhead locker with a crockery rack next to the microwave, and a small locker under the fridge.

Pull-out baskets in washroom
Unusually, the washroom also has its own set of pull-out baskets

This van also comes with felt trays and baskets you can fit as you wish to the rails running around both kitchen and lounge.

The washroom provides a set of pull-out baskets and a cupboard under the basin.

Alternatives to consider

The Elddis Crusader Tempest is a smart and spacious six-berth which offers a bright and comfortable base for family touring. Another option to consider is the Bailey Pegasus Grande GT75 Amalfi – it’s a smart option which offers caravanners great storage options and a good spec.
