For years, Adria’s most upmarket range consisted of two models: the Adria Alpina Mississippi, with a transverse island bed and an end washroom, and the Adria Alpina Colorado, with an end washroom and two fixed single beds.

A couple of seasons ago, they were joined by the Alpina Rio Grande. This has a front kitchen, a layout conventional wisdom says is less popular in the UK. But Adria told me sales are only slightly behind the Mississippi’s, the most popular model in the range.

That leaves the Colorado lingering in third place. So does it still stack up as a caravan worth considering? I went to take a look.

Pitch and set-up

Adria’s tourers have proved a hit at our Owner Satisfaction Awards, where the best makes of caravan are revealed. At our 2024 Awards, the brand topped the new caravan manufacturer category, achieving a notable score of 83.1%.

I’ve always thought the Alpinas look sleek on the road, with their unusual curved front, flush finish and vertical grab handles that join with the air diffusers for more efficient towing.

This year, the exterior of the van has seen the most changes. In response to customer comments that its three ranges looked too similar, Adria has sought to pronounce the differences by changing the decals. Gone is last year’s silver and grey. On the Alpinas, there is now a broad stripe of colour down each side.

Lounge in the Adria Alpina Colorado

Adria is known for its minimalist interiors, but I think this has its own charm. The concave shape of the handle-free overhead lockers adds to the airiness in the lounge of this 8ft-wide caravan, which also has a big sunroof.

I found the carefully positioned ambient lighting, controlled from a panel by the door, and handy spotlights maintained this feel at night, as did the touch-control table lamp.

The lounge is comfortable, and I like how the cushioning on the settees extends to the floor. This season also adds distinct scatter cushions for each of the ranges, designed to match the curtains.

In addition, you get a headrest in each corner – perfect for reading or for those who have bought one of the best caravan TVs.

Adria has made this a U-shaped lounge, but I like how you can remove the central backrest for access to a fold-out shelf, ideal for drinks. The table proper is stored in its own slot inside the cupboard by the door.

Kitchen in the Adria Alpina Colorado

The kitchen continues the Spartan look, with concave lockers above and handle-free drawers underneath. In between, you get a rectangular sink merged in an ‘L’ shape with a three-burner gas hob. There’s a large window behind this, and you also get an extractor fan included as standard.

The gas hob and work surface in the kitchen
Plenty of kitchen worktop around the three-burner gas hob and the large sink

There’s plenty of workspace around the hob, with two mains sockets handily placed. Set up the pull-out extension flap and this becomes an excellent working area.

All UK Alpinas this season have an oven and separate grill fitted as standard. Here, it’s almost exactly under the hob. The microwave is behind a locker door. At 140 litres, I reckon the fridge should be fine for the food of a family of four.

Washroom in the Adria Alpina Colorado

The end washroom is light and airy, thanks to a large (clear) window behind the circular toilet, ambient lighting and a roof vent in the shower cubicle.

That shower has a useful riser and good headroom, although you only get one drainage hole. The deep handbasin in the middle is a salad bowl-style design, with a well-lit mirror behind.

Sleeping in the Adria Alpina Colorado

The two fixed single beds are supportive and a good size, which will always be important in this type of caravan. They can be raised at the head end to make what I thought was a comfortable position for reading, and you also get spotlights here. There are cantilevered wardrobes over the foot of each bed.

The interior of the tourer
The designers have made great use of the interior space in this eight-foot-wide van

The settees in the front come together very easily with two platforms to make up a huge double. You don’t have to use any cushions – just two infills, the type of thoughtful addition that can make a difference when choosing the best 4 berth caravan.

Storage in the Adria Alpina Colorado

The opulent padding on the settees makes them heavy, and you have to lift them to access the mostly clear space each side, as there are no internal access flaps. There are no external ones, either. You can get to the space under the seating up front, by removing cushions. Clear areas under the beds have no internal access, but the nearside one does have an external door.

The overhead lockers are better, although the kitchen takes up three of the four down the offside. The half-height wardrobes are a good size. Storage here includes two pull-out baskets, a couple of drawers, a shallow locker and shelving by the door.

Washroom storage includes shelving by the mirror and a shallow cupboard.

Right around this caravan, you’ll notice metal rails. These house extra shelves that you can position where you choose.

Alternatives to consider

The 2024 Bailey Alicanto Grande Porto is a twin-axle van that provides caravanners with a high level of equipment and a big lounge area. Alternatively, the Buccaneer Commodore is another twin-axle with a comfortable rear sleeping area and a great lounge to relax in.
