THE FIAT PANDA 4×4 makes its world debut at the Paris show today.
This year’s Paris show isn’t short of new 4x4s, but the Panda has to be the smallest. In fact, Fiat says the Panda 4×4 is the only four-wheel-drive in the city car sector and we certainly can’t think of another.
Two versions of the Panda will be sold, both featuring Fiat’s ‘Start&Stop’ system which turns off the engine in stationary traffic. The 85hp 0.9-litre TwinAir is the petrol option, while the 75hp 1.3 Multijet II engine is the sole diesel choice.
We’re chasing technical data from Fiat, but the two-wheel-drive Panda diesel has a kerbweight of 1110kg and a legal towing limit of 900kg. We’d be surprised if the 4×4 didn’t beat those numbers.
The Panda isn’t the only unusually small 4×4 in Paris. Mini is showing the new Paceman (pictured below), a two-door four-seater. It’s available with the ALL4 all-wheel-drive system, first seen on the Mini Countryman. We need to confirm the Paceman’s towing limits, but if it matches the Countryman even the diesel will be restricted to just 800kg.
