Have you ever found there are black bits coming through after flushing your caravan cassette toilet?

You may have tried using the specialist pink fluid which can be purchased online, as well as using plain water to solve the problem, but to little success. Well, the good news is there are some steps you can take that can help to resolve the issue, as well as prevent the problem from happening again – and it’s a relatively simple issue to resolve, too.

In my personal experience, the pink flush additive will often aggravate the growth of algae in the toilet flush tank. It is this algae that dries out on the walls of the tank when its emptied.

As a result, when you go to fill it up to go away the algae will get washed off and flushes into the loo, explaining the black bits that you’re seeing.

So that’s the cause, now for the fix.

I’d advise trying a warm solution of white vinegar in the flush tank, as it is a mild antiseptic and will also break down any limescale that may be forming. Use about a litre of vinegar in half a tank of warm water and then drive around a bit so it can be sloshed around the tank. Then, leave it for a few hours before flushing it down. You may find you need to repeat this several times to fully get rid of it.

Once you have successfully cleaned it out, you can just fill it with fresh water for flushing.

As a small aside, if you’re a fan of off-grid caravanning on a regular basis, you should consider using a spray bottle with a solution of the pink fluid to rinse the bowl after use. This is because it puts a lot less water into your cassette, so it will last longer before you need to think about emptying the caravan toilet.
