Between changing tastes and the move to electrification, the big diesel estate car is a type of vehicle that’s running out of road. But the new Mercedes E450d Estate makes a fitting swansong.

It weighs as much as many big SUVs, and it has four-wheel drive. Unless you plan to go a long way off the beaten track, you are not missing much by picking the E-Class over a luxury 4×4 car for towing.

The 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel produces 367hp, with another 23hp from electrical power. Choose from quiet and economical progress or effortless and rapid acceleration. Even towing a van weighing 1800kg, we found the E450d had plenty in reserve.

Although the engine is a star, the chassis deserves equal top billing. With the adaptive suspension in its most comfortable setting, the car absorbs bumps better than some luxury limos. In the sportiest mode, the Merc is also remarkably nimble for such a heavyweight vehicle.

It’s practical, too, with plenty of passenger space in the luxurious cabin. The boot has an impressive 615-litre capacity, which betters that of rivals such as the Audi A6 Avant and the BMW 5 Series Touring.

With this engine, though, the E-Class Estate is extremely expensive. Even so, if we had the means, we’d be very tempted.

As well as a good tow car, one thing that can make a big difference to your towing experience is the best caravan sat nav – it can help you enjoy a stress-free experience on the road, ensuring you safely arrive at your destination.
